Several days of frustration attempting to understand what was wrong connecting this to my HP Fury G8 17” and two standalone monitors was very frustrating as the monitors would not display, my G8 continued to go into sleep mode despite my settings and the connected SSD’s would not show up as connected. A 1-2 hour session was required with HP Business Support, downloading several SP files and installing same to get this G4 to work properly - kudos to HP Business Support, however this G$ should have come with an installation cd that would have prompted all of this when I first connected it to the laptop. That would have saved me at least 2-3 days of frustration and loss of working hours.

Something is not working right with the communication with the docking station and the computer. All of the external items are dropping out. At this point the docking station is only good for power.

I didn't spend all this money to have to connect to the laptop. That's why I bought the docking station. So just the laptop to the docking station and done. Nothing else has been an issue. Just have been too busy to contact HP.

I have had no problems with connections, with device communication, or device recognition. My complaint or suggestion is to remove the DP ports and add more USB-A and USB-C ports. I had to add a USB hub for the rest of my connections.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Peter Bergh from Needs firmware update When I first connected it to my laptop and connected my hubs to the dock, the laptop only saw one device from each hub. I checked HP's web site and found out that the dock had been delivered with out-of-date firmware. I downloaded and installed the latest dock firmware, after which everything was hunky-dory. It's HP's job to make sure their devices are delivered with up-to-date firmware. HP failed to do that. The customer should not have to fix HP's failures. Bottom line: device fine, HP failed.

Team, will this new HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 also work with older EliteBook 850's such as the G6 G7 G*, etc?

Hello Gus and thanks for your question! Yes, if those EliteBooks came equipped with a ThunderBolt compatible dock this HP Thunderbolt Dock G4 280W will be compatible. If the EliteBooks did not have a Thunderbolt Dock but a USB-C dock then the HP USB-C Dock G5 is your best option. Thanks for being an HP customer!

I got two HP E24 G4 E-Series - LED monitor - 23.8" connected to this docking station. I got an HP EliteBook 840 G5. I used two Display cables to connect them to the docking station. One works while the other doesn't. Is there a driver needed?

Hi I have this docking station HP Inc Thunderbolt Dock 280W G4 w/Combo Cable and connected to a Z Fury laptop. When I shut-down my laptop, any device connected to the docking station remains powered on. Is that normal ? Any way to shut down total.

Thank you for your question regarding the Thunderbolt Dock 280W G4. The user guide https://kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public/pdf_3996809_en-US-1.pdf. On page 1 you can see the status of the power button on the dock and that will give you an idea if it is powered on or hibernating. Since the dock has its own power supply, it is not surprising to see it powering other connected devices.

I'm a little confused. What's the point of the 280W G4 docking station if a separate cable (like the combo cable has) is required to power your laptop? Why not just buy the 120W version and plug the 4.5mm barrel of the AC adapter directly into the host?

The HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4 provides charging power for up to 90W. If your PC requires more power than that to charge then the 280W is recommended. Thank you for your question!
