Not Cost Effective
The cost of printing per sheet is a poor marketing strategy to sell more of a product. How much does ink really cost to manufacture and fill a cartridge? HP isn't fooling anyone about not being gouged for replacement cartridges. I can print a document for half the price at a print kiosk. I Will look to another brand of printer when my current printer needs replacing.

My package of HP ink 61 combo arrived right on time. I find that it is long lasting and my printer allows me to keep track of ink remaining. Despite printing in both black and white and color, the inks are evenly used throughout the life of the cartridges.

Much easier to find the ink cartridges online than shopping in the stores. Inventory in the stores are some what low; finding one color in store and going to another place for the other color.

Hello. Thanks for your question. You cannot replace the tricolor ink cartridge with a black ink cartridge. You can use your printer in single-cartridge mode. That means you can take out the tricolor ink cartridge. And the printer will go into single cartridge mode automatically so you can print with the black ink cartridge.
